A&T Band

A&T Bands

  • The A&T Band began with the music department during President James Benson Dudley's administration.
  • The first director of music the music department was Charles Stwewart, who was a faculty member from 1909 to 1916.
  • The NC A&T State University band program was started in 1918 with about a 50-piece band.
  • By the 1930s, the band was offered as an extracurricular activity
  • when the 1960s rolled around, the administration changed and the music department was combined with other divisions besides the band.
  • The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a change in leadership. Mr. Jimmy Williams and Dr. Johnny B. Hodge Jr. became the directors and the name “Blue and Gold Marching Machine” was born.
  • Dr. Johnny B. Hodge Jr. served as director of bands spanning four decades.

School of Nursing

  • The School of nursing was one of the first professional programs at NC A&T
  • In the fall semester of 1953, the school recieved 300 applications and enrolled 48 applications with an instructional staff of five nurses
  • Today, the school of nursing is in the Hariston College of Health and Human Sciences
  • The School of nursing offeres 3 routes to earn a bachelors degree: Traditional, accelerated, and BSN completion for RNs
  • The Traditional BS offers a 4-year program and experiemental learning in class, clinical, and virtual lab and community settings
  • The Accelerated BS is for secoond-degree students who desire to pursue as a professional registered nurse.
  • The BSN Completion (BSNC) was created for the registered nurse whose career goals will be enhanced through additional study.
  • BSNC is tailored for RNs who have an Associate in Arts degree (A.A.) in Nursing or Associate in Science (A.S.) in Nursing from an accredited community college and wish to advance their career by earning a Bachelor’s degree.
  • The North Carolina Piedmont Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) Option consists of four years of seamless nursing education that leads to an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree.
  • collaborative dual enrollment program with NC A&T, Davidson community college, guilford community college, and vance-granville community college

Honors College

  • The Honors Program began in 1998 and became the Honors College in 2017
  • The Honors College offers student centered learning experiences that promote intellectual growth, proffessional focus, leadership development and cultural appreciation
  • The Dowdy Scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Lewis C. Dowdy, NC A&T's sixth president and first chancellor
  • The Cheatham-White Scholarship, established in 2018, is named for Henry P. Cheatham and George H. White, two African Americans who represented North Carolina in the United States Congress around the turn of the 20th century.
  • The February One Scholarship is named for the day in 1960 when A&T freshmen Ezell Blair Jr., Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond galvanized a national sit-in movement bu refusing to leave a lunch counter in Greensboro without being served.

Military Science Department

  • The Military department was part of the program that the Agricultural and Mechanical College offered under the 1862 Morrill Act.
  • NC A&T had a Junior Unite of the Army ROTC until 1942 when the Senior program begain.
  • In 1951, the Senior Air Force ROTC Program was instituted.
  • In 1947, eight second lieutenants were commissioned and branched into infantry
  • In 1954, the Branch Specific Unit (infantry) was converted to a General Military Science (GMS)
  • In September of 1968, ROTC became an elective course
  • To date, the North Carolina A&T State University Army ROTC program has commissioned over 1,775 officers since 1947.
