Spy Techniques of the Revolutanary War

By Hailey S, Michael C, and Collin C

Summary Of Toliver's Secret

A young girl who lives in New York named Ellen Toliver learns that her grandfather is a spy for the American Revolution. When he hurts his ankle, it's up to her to deliver a secret message baked into a round of bread to Mr. Shannon, a carrier to deliver the message to General Washington, an important leader of the American Revolution. Delivering the message is harder than Ellen thinks. She has to sail across the bay to Elizabeth Town, and deliver the bread to Mr. Shannon. But when she ends up on a boat full of hungry redcoats, she has to use her head to get out of all the troubles she faces. And when she finds that the boat that she sailed on took her 13 miles from Elizabeth town, she has to catch a ride with Murdock, a farmer.

Delivering the message seems impossible, but as long as Ellen keeps a positive attitude and has courage, she can do anything.

Summary Of Toliver's Secret

Toliver's Secret and The Secret Li...

Toliver's Secret and The Secret Life

of Pets

A simalar story to Toliver's Secret is The Secret Life of Pets, because of these reasons

1. Redcoats moved into houses in New York, and Over styed their welcome, and Duke the dog moves in with Max the dog and over stays his welcome.

2. Max and Duke lie to the Flushed Pets that they hate humans, and Ellen has to lie the the Redcoats that the bread is for an old man's birthday, so they don't eat it.

3. The poodle acts like a proper but when his owner leaves, he rockes out to rock music. Ellen pretends to be a boy, even though she's a girl.

As you can see, Toliver's Secret and The Secret Life of Pets are simalar stories because of these reasons.

Point of View and Perspective

If a British girl read Toliver's Secret she would probably say ''our soldiers aren't that dumb'' because of their perspective on the Revolutionary War. The British probably thought that we were the insurgents, because we were rebelling against King George III. We were the bad guys, because back in the 1770's, the colonist's were still loyal subjects to the British Crown. Once we went to war with Great Britain, the rebellious colonist's were committing acts of treason, a crime punishable by death.

Theme

The theme of Toliver's Secret is that if you have courage, you can do anything.

One example of this theme is when Ellen finds out that she ended up in Amboy instead of Elizabeth town. She decides to to run all the way to Elizabeth Town. She knows it will be hard but if she has courage, she knows she can do it.

Another example of this theme is Grandfather. He has courage that Ellen can deliver the Message to Mr. Shannon.

If you have bravery, you can do anything is a theme in Toliver's Secret because it occurs multiple times in the story.

Settings

Settings

There are several different settings in Toliver’s Secret. The story starts in the kitchen of Grandfather’s house, in Long Island, New York. Ellen’s Mother, Abby is baking the round of bread, that Grandfather will insert the secret message into. Ellen is brushing her hair.

Secondly, The boat were Ellen gets a ride to Amboy. The boat is filled with loud redcoats, who want her bread.Ellen squeezed between redcoats.

Next, is Amboy, New Jersey, a small town filled with people. Redcoats there are wearing short skirts, and plaid hats.

Lastly is the Jolly Fox Tavern, in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey, a very noisy little diner full of loud redcoats. Mistress Shannon is a bartender, and waits hand an foot on redcoats all day.

Rating of Toliver's Secret

We would rate Toliver’s Secret a 4 on a scale of 5, because it was a little bit of a tall tail, but it was entertaining and funny. It was really funny when Mistress Murdock tried to pull of Ellen’s breeches, but Ellen wouldn’t let her because she would discover that she’s a girl.

We would rate it a 5 on a scale of 5 on historical value, because it teaches us about the dangerous, life tacking risks that American spies had to take in order to win America’s freedom, such as running 10 miles to deliver a message to a Carrier who will deliver it to Gorge Washington.

We would rate it a 5 on a scale of 5 on entertainment, because of all the funny things Ellen had to do in order to keep the bread safe, like curl up in a ball to keep a hungry redcoat from finding the secret message inside the round of bread.

Over All Reading

Reading was pretty simple, bus sometimes we got off topic. It was hard to stop mid sentence to wright down vocabulary. Sometimes we felt we were behind and had to set our goal high so that we could catch up.
