Exposition

Exposition

Jinny

Protagonist

Jinny is the protagonist. She is a teenage girl who worries about the one day when the green boat will come to take her away. She is rather bossy and does what she wants to. She is also nervous about her care, Ess who is new to the island.

Antagonist

The green boat is the antagonist. It comes back every year to drop off a new kid that will be the youngest on the island, and takes the oldest kid away from the island, to a place unknown.

Antagonist

Text Evidence:

The boat never drifted. Nobody had any idea how it worked. It arrived at this same spot, through the thick mist. As if pulled by an invisible string. Then it left again, a few minutes later, the same way. The boat was as reliable as anything, as sure as the stars.

Setting

Setting

Orphan Island is set on an island in the future. This island is safe only when there are 9 children on it, any more or less and it becomes a normal island and is not very safe.

Character vs. Self

Conflict

Jinny does not want to leave the island, so, when it's her turn to leave, she decides to stay. Now there are 10 kids on the island, so it becomes unsafe. The island sends signs that it is no longer safe but Jinny doesn't listen until someone gets hurt. Jinny knows what she must do, but that means giving up the thing she loves most, the island, and leaving Ess. She finally decides that she must leave the island and bring the injured kid with her.

Character vs. Self

Before you do what's good for you, stop and do what's good for others.

The Green Boat Arrives

Jinnys best friend Dean leaves on the green boat, and Jinny is worried because she may not be able to take care of Ess, the youngest child on the island and her responsibility.

Inciting Incident

Text Evidence:

After that, Jinny pushed the girl from her thoughts, because it was time. The boat was empty. Waiting. Jinny turned to look at Deen and frowned. "Are you ready?"

Rising Action

Rising Action 1:

Jinny is starting to understand how to teach and take care of Ess, but she still needs some help. Joon helps Jinny teach Ess how to swim by throwing her into the water. After that, Ess could swim!

Text Evidence:

In the distance her eyes found Joon, striding quickly back down the length of the dock, with Ess wriggling and kicking in her arms...

"Aaaaggh!" Ess turned immediately into a flurry of water and flailing arms and screams, a shouting, choking disaster.

Rising Action

Rising Action 2:

Jinny is dreading the moment she will have to get on the green boat and leave the island forever. The day came all too soon. She makes the unruly decision to stay, no one has ever done this before and most of the kids think it will curse the island. The boat came and brings a new kid with it, his name is Loo, and he is a troublemaker.

Rising Action

Rising Action 3:

The island starts giving signs that it is no longer safe.

The Wind

Occasionally the kids go on a hike up a mountain to get some food. Sometimes for fun, the kids jump off a cliff and the wind pushes them back onto the cliff. The wind protects them. But now there are more than 9 kids on the island so the wind is gone, and it will no longer push them back to safety.

The Bees

The kids go hiking to collect honey from beehives. The boys start chasing a small black cat. Jinny is standing by the beehives and she sees the boys and Ess running toward her. She has a honeycomb in her hand and can feel some bees stinging her hand. She throws the honeycomb as far away from her as possible and catches Ess before she can run into the hives. But the honeycomb falls close to the boys and they get stung badly. The bees have almost never stung before.

The Snow

The kids are on the beach and it starts to snow, on a sunny island that has never had snow before.

Climax

Jinny and the others are going to the mountain to see if they can find the bracelet that Ess lost. Jinny and Ess are looking on a big mountain of boulders when they hear a shriek, Jinny runs to the sound and finds Loo on the ground with a snake cornering him. The snake lunges and bites Loo.

Text Evidence:

Climax

Then. A scream. An earsplitting scream. A piercing cry from somewhere close, in the grass ... Loo sat on the ground in the high grass, legs spread wide. Inbetween them, the snake stretched up, vertical, as though it had sprouted there, grown as a seed from the earth and now impossibly tall... Its teeth were needles. And it made a strange rattling sound Jinny had never heard before. Like a warning, or an end. Loo was motionless. His face gone white. His eyes closed.

Jinny decides she has to leave to save Loo.

Falling Action

Now that Jinny knows she must go, she says goodbye and sorry for the harm she caused. She puts the boat in the water and puts Loo in, then steps in herself. She sets sail, and can soon see nothing but mist.
