Coming up With an Interesting Topic

How to Start

Understanding What is Expected

Step

I start by reading the assignment two or three times so I understand what I should be looking for and what sort of topics would fit the best with the assignment.

1

Picking a Topic

Step

This part is usually one of the hardest for me. I spend a lot of time trying to find a topic that both interests me and that I have enough information available for.

2

Thinking of a Title

Step

This is another difficult part for me because I never feel like my titles are creative or intriguing enough. I usually get stuck on this step which leads to a decent amount of procrastination. Sometimes I skip this step until I finish my writing then come back to it at the end.

3 Main Ideas

Finding Relevant Information

Best Topics

1

Picking 3 Main Points to Focus on

Google is always my starting point when it comes to researching a topic. I always try to find credible sources first like WSJ and NY Times. After looking into my topic and seeing what information is out there, I narrow it down to the three most significant points which I can break down into my three body paragraphs.

Making a List

2

Making a List

Once I have my topics picked out, I go through all of the information that I've found and pick out what I think will fit best in my essay. As I'm doing this, I am also copying the URL of where I'm getting my information from. This is so I know what to site and so I can make my citations at the end.

Time to Organize

3

Organizing

My last step in the research process is to break down all of the information I have, put it into paragraph form and make sure it is pieced together in a way that flows well. I read over what I have and go back to my sources or even find some new ones to fill in gaps.

Look for Different Things Each Time

Proof Read

First Proof Read

Missing Pieces

The first thing I do is check for missing pieces or areas where I should further elaborate a certain idea or concept that I talk about within the paragraph. This helps to make sure that the reader has just as much understanding about the topic as I do.

1

Second Proof Read

Flow

This time, I make sure all of the information I have is relevant and flows in a way that the reader can follow.

2

Third Proof Read

Spelling & Grammar

The last time I read through my essay, I focus on any obvious spelling and grammar errors to make sure everything is correct before moving on to my citations page and turning in the assignment.

3

Easy Bib

Citing Sources

Once my essay is complete, I use EasyBib to turn my URLs into proper sources and make a citations page, listing them in alphabetical order.
