On June 17, 2015, the Charleston Church Massacre took place at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. That church is one of the oldest black churches in the United States and it has since been a center for organizing things related to civil rights. The morning after the massacre, police arrested Dylann Roof in Shelby, North Carolina. Dylann Roof is a 21-year-old white supremacist who had attended the Bible study before the shooting. A white supremacist is a person who believes that the white race is inherently superior to other races and that white people should have control over people of other races.
The effect of the Charleston Church Massacre entails 9 deaths and 1 injury. A few weeks after the Charleston Church Massacre, another young white man walked into a Bible study at another black South Carolina church. He didn't understand why his presence agitated the regulars at the church. The man's body language, disaproving sighs, and eye-rolling made the congregants all the more warry as they tried to focus on the Scripture.
One thing that changed due to the Charleston Church Massacre is that it made people more aware of things that could possibly happen and it made people more aware of reality. It helped people believe that terrible things like this happen and what the consequences of such actions are, the death penalty. This massacre also brought to light what white supremacy is.
