Many responses to the unveiling of the atrocities that occured towards Henrietta Lacks and the exploitation that the Lacks family continues to experience to this day are bad and misguided. First, the National Institutue of Health's "understanding" with the Lacks family on their genome research was lacking in the sense that they did not include regulations on commerical benefit of multibillion dollar companies that continue to exploit medical malpractice. Second, HBO and Oprah Winfrey's decision to support and produce the movie based on Skloot's book was misguided. While they might have had good intentions by deleivering the story in a different way to be more accesible to a bigger audience and including Lacks family members on the creation of the movie, it was just another way Henrietta and her family are continued to be exploited. Deborah died before she could even read the draft of both the movie and the book. Based on how Skloot and the movie creators treated Deborah, it is very difficult to find differences between Deborah's exploitation and her mother, Henrietta's, decades earlier.
