Both boys and girls lived very different lives than we do today.
Surviving your first few months were tough for newborns. Each newborn was examined. If the baby was healthy and in good shape it was assumed that it would be able to serve and fulfill it's duty to Sparta. If not the baby was left on Mount Taygetus to die.
Both boys and girls were expected to be physically, emotionally, and mentally strong. They were also raised to defend and promote Sparta at all costs. Sparta came first, family came second.
Girls lived with their mothers while they went to school.
To stay in peak physical condition girls participated in activities such as discus, javelin, and horseback riding.
Boys lived very different lives. When they turned seven they were sent to the agoge where they began their training for the military. They went through very vigours training.
