How Does Geography Shape a Culture ?

Physical Geography

Physical geography is the study of all natural features and occurences on Earth. This includes bodies of water, climate, terrain, landforms, and wildlife.

Physical Geography and the Lakes Region

Physical Geography and the Lakes Region

For years, the Lakes Region has been attracting people for it's stunning mountains and beautiful lakes. In the Lakes Region you can find many hiking trails, and most of them feature great views of the lakes. I enjoyed the views from several trails that I hiked with Five Days of Sandwich. One of the largest and most popular lakes is Lake Winnipesaukee, but I find I prefer the smaller lakes, like Squam. Squam Lake has a beautiful beach in Sandwich and attracts many visitors during the summer. During the fall, the vibrant foliage along with fairs draws people to the area, as they have been doing for many years. As the seasons change into winter, one of my favorite hiking trails on Redhill ices over and the Red Hill Ski area opens for the season, providing a great sense of community along with some winter fun.

Physical Geography and Me

Physical Geography and Me

For half of my life I lived in Montana. When I moved to New Hampshire, I noticed how drastically different the climate and landscape are here. New Hampshire, the Lakes Region in particular, has abundant water while Montana tends to be dry. I've learned to love swimming and boating. Now water is a huge part of my life!

Living here in the Lakes Region is much different than living in any other part of the state or country. When I lived in Montana, swimming areas were less common and we seldom went. The landscape was very open with large valleys surrounded by moutains. Sometimes I feel claustrophobic here with all the trees; they obstruct the beautiful views.

Economic Geography

Economic geography is the study of trade and natural resources across the world.

Economic Geography and the Lakes Region

The Lakes Region has many natural resources including water,

maple trees, granite, and timber. The water provided by our lakes, streams and ponds is suitable for drinking after filtration and draws tourists in the summer, which supports our local businesses. New Hampshire is naturally forested, so much of the wood we use and the maple syrup we eat is locally sourced. Altough the Lakes Region is still a great place to find work the industry has changed dramatically. In the early nine-teen hundreds Mill Falls Market wasn't even on people's minds, rather a linen mill stood where the now market place is. On

the same street as the linen mill an asbestos factory was providing locals

with jobs, and unknowingly endangering their lives. Thankfully now Mill

Falls has a safe working environment.

The Lakes Region is a very unique place to work, it's full of farms, restaraunts, and health facilities. If I had to choose a job to

do here I would be a veterinarian. I would be a veterinarian

because I could work with animals all day, get to know my

customers, and go home at night feeling good about what

I do.

Political Geography

Political geography is the study of borders, affairs, political belief, and goverment of countries and their people.

In the United States we vote for our goverment officials, that includes our New Hampshire officials, Governor Chris Sununu, Senate President Chuck Morse, Secretary of State Hon. William Gardner, and Attorney General Joseph A. Foster

to name a few. On a smaller scale in Sandwich we vote on changes to the town

and town policies, doing so helps us make changes to our community for

the better. Sandwich and many other towns make up the Lakes Region,

many of them share borders with eachother. As things go, when your

shares many borders with other towns in your region you grow to have a

alrger sense of community and belonging.

My family is very open about how we vote, with eachother. When

my parents vote in the town they can choose what affects our lives and how we live

them. However my family is not able to be as open with our politicalbeliefs where

we live, because so many people oppose them and don't tollerate

people like us.

Cultural Geography

The study of the traditions, religions, food, beliefs, and pastimes of groups of people all over the globe.

Cultural Geography and the Lakes Region

The natural world provides us with several opportunities to enjoy ourselves and relax. Here in the Lakes Region, we have lakes perfect for swimming and boating along with majestic mountains and beautiful hiking trails with wonderous veiws. So many restauranteurs decide to set up shop in the Lakes Region that our community is practically

bursting with flavours and culture. On Fridays during the summer

numerous restaurants hire a musician or a band to play, the music

provides a loose and enjoyable atmosphere. After a relaxing night

out listening to music, visitors and locals can attend sporting

events, either playing or cheering on the athletes.

Many visitors and residents participate in sports. With four distinct

seasons, the Lakes Region offers a wide variety of activities, some

unique like Pond Hockey. Horseback riding is a year round sport and has

amassed quite a following, from trail riding to gaming and hunter-jumpers.

I enjoy reading a lot, and I love that you can find so many libraries in the Lakes Region, providing me with enough reading material for a lifetime. During the summer I try to take advantage of the lakes and mountains by hiking and swimming when I have the time. I also really enjoy riding my horse all over Sandwich.

How does geography shape a culture?

As a conclusion I believe that the different types of geography and how they change over time has a large affect on a culture and it's people. It affects how they live their lives, what they can do with them, and how much control they have over themselves. I am glad to live in a country where I can choose how I live my life and how the different kinds of geography will affect me.
