"The Golden Touch": A Fantasy Film

Based upon the short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Act 1

Picture this, you are "in a dark and dreary apartment, underground, at the basement of" a palace. It is filled from the floor to the ceiling with gold. You see King Midas drooling over his riches, when a strange man appears with a smile that has "a kind of golden radiance in it." His beloved young daughter waits for him upstairs to show him the flowers she collected in the garden. King Midas is too preoccupied with his desires to leave the basement.

Act 2

Soon after the stranger appears, he offers King Midas something he cannot turn down, the Golden Touch. King Midas is thrilled that he will finally be happy and thinks that this wish will satisfy him."I ask nothing else, to render me perfectly happy." King Midas lies awake all night wondering if his wish will come true or if it was all a farse. He gets up early that morning, and "The Golden Touch had come to him with the first sunbeam!"

Act 3

Once King Midas realizes that he has The Golden Touch, he goes around his bedroom touching everything like he's a kid on Christmas morning. At breakfast, his daughter Marygold runs into the room crying because the flowers outside are all gold and she doesn't like this. Everything starts to go bad for King Midas, his food turns to gold, his coffee turned to gold, and lastly his daughter tries to hug him and she turns to gold. KIng Midas begs and begs for the Golden Touch to go away, and the stranger appears yet again to tell King Midas what he has to do to undo the Golden Touch. The stranger tells him to "plunge into the river that glides past the bottom of your garden. Take likewise a vase of the same water, and sprinkle it over any object that you may desire to change back again from gold into its former substance. Finally King Midas realizes what is truly important.
