What are State Rights?

State Rights

State rights are certain laws that can be decided by the state and it's people. The idea that the states that make up the United States of America should have individual rights to work as their own independent governments beyond the control of the national government.

What are Federal rights?

Federal Rights

The system of government as defined in the Constitution which is based on the separation of powers among three branches. For example, The Federal government can declare war and set taxing.

The three branches of government are Legislative, Executive, and the Judicial.

State rights in the civil war were the rights held by U.S. states to govern themselves beyond the control of the Federal government. For example one of the state rights was that the people could vote on slavery.

The Federal government restricted constitutional liberty's during the Civil War including freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
