Inside Out

Abstract Thought

Abstract thought is the ability to think of a concept, principle, or ideas that are not physically present.

Humans develop this ability around the age of 11-12, in some rare cases even earlier.

For example, children before this age show only concrete thinking, an action is considered good or evil and right or wrong.

Example from movie

Abstract Thought: Examples

-When Bing-Bong brings Joy and Sadness through a shortcut, hoping to save time to help Riley, they instead walk into an area where abstract thought occurs. The group is trapped here and there bodies are contorted into different dimensions. The different dimensions visualization highlights the principle of abstract thought, first and second dimension would be as stated earlier(good or evil). But third dimension would be that there was moral ambiguity present, you cant see the ambiguity, it's just a concept you understand, a higher level of thinking.

-The mind workers state that Riley is attempting to understand the concept of Loneliness, you cannot see or physically touch the concept, while a child may percieve Loneliness as just being lonely, an adult can think of this in a more generalized perception.

Apathetic

The inability to express emotions or more so the lack of motivation.

Most likely linked to depression and may also develop due to trauma.

Apathetic

Example from movie.

Apathetic

- When the emotions, Anger, Nervousness, and Disgust argue over the console of Riley's feelings, they realize the console is turning black and unresponsive to their actions. This highlights the fact that the emotions have lost the ability to express themselves.

-As another example from this occurence, when Riley is on the bus leaving home, she is completely expressionless because of the result stated above.

Repression

The act of hiding desires, feelings, instincts by an individual's conscious mind to focus more towards pleasuring ideals.

Repression

Examples from movie

Repression

- Upon moving to the new home, Riley is at first in despair at seeing the house in general, but further imagines her room could look a lot more appealing than she thought.

-When Riley is laying in her bed, she almost believes her parents are to blame for her depressive nature, but when she hears that her mother wants her to be happy for them, Riley ultimately decides to focus on the positive.

Subconscious

The part of the mind that isn't consciously aware but has effects on one's action's and feelings.

First usage of the term was by Sigmund Freud, where most of his research and work was based off.

Example from movie

Subconscious

-Nightmares are represented as coming from the subconscious mind in Inside Out as they are considered repressed fears. As Riley is asleep, Joy and Sadness venture into her subconscious where they find a clown and grandma's vacuum.

Memory

Memory

The ability of the mind where information is encoded, stored, and retrieved.

Short term memory is information retained by the mind for only a slight period of time(15-20 seconds) unless it's consolidated.

Long term memory is information that has been retained through encoding and can be stored in the brain for an innumerable time.

Examples from movie

Memory

-Long term memory is shown as the memory balls that are shelved in Riley's mind. they are a innumerable amount of them that have been processed in her mind.

-Short term memory is highlighted by the memory balls that come and go through Riley's present experiences, if they are deemed as long term memorable, they are sent to long term memory.

-Decay theory is shown in Inside out, when the mind workers roam the Long term memory shelves, they determine that one is becoming forgotten, thus sent to the abyss of other forgotten memories where they decay. It is also shown when Bing-Bong does not escape the abyss and "decays" and is therefore forgotten.

Happiness

A mental or emotional state that range from contentment to extreme joy.

The concept of true happiness is vague, it is widely accepted that happiness can never be permanently attained. It is fleeting feeling that we constantly pursue.

Western culture has taught the principle that feeling "happy" is the only way human's should pursue. Never be mindful of sadness.

Happiness

-Pursuit for happiness is commonly shown in the film, Joy frequently attempts to prevent sadness from touching memories. Joy only wants Riley to be happy.

-Through this pursuit, many of the negative events that establish the conflict in the movie result. Only at the end, when sadness is allowed to touch the core memory is when they realize that through "sadness" we can also reminisce on joy and love.

Examples from movie

Basic Emotions

The basic emotions are the general feelings associated with the framework of human emotion.

In a recent study by Glasglow University, it is preferred that we have six basic emotions such as, happiness, fear, sadness, disgust, anger, and surprised.

Basic Emotions Examples

Examples from movie

-Inside out portrays the majority of the basic emotions through the characters as Joy, Sadness, Anger, Nervousness, and Disgust.

-When one of the "emotions" takes control of the console, that emotion becomes prevalent in Riley's actions.

-During dinner, Anger takes control of Riley and spouts mean comments, this also prompts the Anger in the father to also retaliate, ultimately telling Riley to go to her room.
