General

General

Definition

Protective breathing equipment (PBE) is a breathing apparatus designed to protect the wearer's eyes and respiratory tract from the effects of smoke and toxic fumes while fighting an in-flight fire.

Definition

Notes

  • It can be worn by persons with glasses, jewelry, beard or hair-bun.
  • Excess make-up should be removed before donning the PBE. Contact between grease and oxygen can cause burns.
  • Always brush hair after the hood removal to break down any oxygen build.

"L'air Liquid" PBE

Description

Description

Oxygen is supplied automatically to the smoke hood when this is placed over the head

Benefit

Benefit

A communication diaphragm allows the wearer's voice to be heard

Signals

Signals

  • GREEN indicator : the hood is in working
  • RED indicator : the hood will become unusable

Note : if decompression takes place at more than 30,000ft, the RED indicator might appear, in which case the hood remains useable.

Description

A hood encloses the head of the wearer and the breathable air is

maintained by a chemical generator

Advantages

- Speaking diaphragm to improved communications.

- The low moisture content inside hood temperature comfortable, misting or fogging of the visor and/ or glasses is minimal.

-A neck shield extends downward from the neck of the hood to protect the collar and upper shoulder area of the user from direct flame contact.

- The PBE is a demand device which means the harder you work the more oxygen will be produced.

Operation

Precaution

  • The blue cone must be positioned high on nose with a firm seal, otherwise fogging may occur.
  • Head area is protected the rest of your body is not. The wearer should guard against the feeling of invincibility.
  • If the hood begins to deflate and become hot and moist, oxygen supply is depleted and the PBE must be removed.
  • Failure of starter candle: If the starter candle fails to actuate when the adjustment strap is pulled an additional sharp pull on the strap may be adequate to actuate the device. If the device still fails, the hood will continue to function. Placing fingers into the neck-seal may be required to enable sufficient breathing volume until the chemical generator begins supplying the oxygen.
  • Loss of neck-seal: The wearer should quickly go to a safe area and remove the hood and don an alternative unit.

Precaution

Drager/Oxycrew

The life support pack is contained inside a breathing bag cover which is worn at the front over the chest.

Drager/Oxycrew

Operation

  • Open container and remove hood contained within the foil bag.
  • Pull red tear strip at top of foil bag and remove hood.
  • Don the hood, ensuring the breathing bag cover is to the front over the chest. Neck seal must be free of obstruction e.g hair, collar, …etc and head harness polled down for a secure fit.
  • Fit oral-nasal mask securely to nose and mouth and pull black quick start toggle to activate.
  • Tight strap around the waist

Operation

Abnormal Operation

Abnormal Operation

  • If the hood collapses onto the head during inhalation of there is an increased breathing resistance, firstly corrective fitting of the mask. The cause may be an incomplete respiration back into the breathing bag (leakage) or an empty oxygen source.
  • After correcting the mask fit, check the equipment by marking five deep breaths. If the increased resistance or the collapsing of the hood occur again, either the oxygen reserve has been used up for the hood its defective and should be removed
  • Loss of neck-seal : the wearer should quickly go to a safe area, remove the hood and don an alternative unit."

Precaution

Precaution

  • Heavy make-up should be removed before donning the PBE. Contact between grease and oxygen can cause burns.
  • Always brush hair after the hood removal to break down any oxygen build up.
  • The oral-nasal mask must be positioned high on nose with a firm seal, otherwise fogging may occur.
