France began to occupy the region of Niger in 1890. This was an important date that contributed to the independence of the country. If France would not have taken over the region, Niger would not have had to gain their independence. They would have already been independent. Throughout the year of 1890, French signed treaties with the rulers of the Say, Gaya, and Dosso states

Although France signed treaties in 1890, Niger did not become a formal French colony until 1922. Niger became a colony within French West Africa.
