ABOUT THIS PERIOD

The Paleogene period marks the beginning of the Cenozoic Era. Cenozoic Era, third of the major eras of Earth’s history, beginning about 65 million years ago and extending to the present. It was the interval of time during which the continents assumed their modern configuration and geographic positions and during which Earth’s flora and fauna evolved toward those of the present.

Bonus fact: The Paleogene is made up of three epochs:

  • The Paleocene Epoch
  • The Eocene Epoch
  • The Oligocene Epoch

Each epoch has unique characteristics for climate, geography, plants and animals.

TIMELINE

ANIMALS DURING THIS TIME

  • At the commencement of this period, the Paleogene period is when modern mammals started to develop. There were the first odd-toed animals (perissodactyls, like rhinos and horses) and even-toed mammals (artiodactyls, like camels). Also during this time, elephants, whales, and other animals with hooves lived. These mammals were little at first, but by the Oligocene epoch, they had all reached powerful and respected sizes.

Fun Fact:

  • The beginning of the Paleogene period was ruled by birds. They evolved from the remaining dinosaurs. These first birds were predatory, large, and flightless. Gastronis looked like a carnivorous dinosaur. Many of the birds that appeared during this period are present today.

  • The sea's surface started to warm after that.

  • Animals and vegetation on the entire world were impacted by this.

  • Animals began to diversify further as tropical flora emerged.
  • Once more, the weather turned chilly and dry.

  • In the north, this made way for open meadows and woods.

  • Because of the drier and cooler climate, grasses began to flourish in large quantities.

  • . These little plants proliferated all over the world.

  • They provided food for grazing animals and refuge for small animals and birds. They also avoided soil erosion and stabilized the soil.
  • Many flowering plants existed throughout the early Paleogene.

  • Arctic continents were covered in deciduous woods

  • Tropical areas were covered in jungles and rain forests.

  • The evolution of grasses was influenced by climatic and geological changes.

  • The cooling of the ocean waters signaled the beginning of the period's drying and cooling environment.
