Eli, Jackeline, and Toby

Summary

In this chapter, Marji's parents manage to go on vacation and bring back some posters of a music artist Marji is a fan of. Though it isn't allowed where they are, Marji's parents manage to sneak a poster and some clothes for her to wear.

Summary

Main focus

One main thing that is noticed is how Marji is caught and shamed by some women known as "The Guardians". These women call Marji a 'whore' because she's wearing tight jeans and her hijab is a little farther back.

Theme

Theme

Silenced voices is an obvious theme in this chapter. The entire chapter is written in silence, and Marjane is not permitted to express her own sense of fashion or opinions about the things she wears and owns. Marjane is being silenced about what she wants to wear and own by the women who approach her about her clothing.

Importance

Importance

Importance: This shows that marjis mom started to asume that the guy was asuming they were smugglers because of the way they look since he kept asking them if they were sure they didnt have nothing illegal.

Importance: This shows that these two ladies, who are guardians, take their job/religion seriously since they want to make sure that everyone is wearing their vail properly and making sure they get "punished" if they're not.
