Before the civil war, many enslaved african americans could not read or write. Not many African- American schools existed and Quaker schools were few other schools that allowed African Americans. After the civil war, educated African americans started their own schools. Also some missionaries were sent out south to set up school and it was then the first African American colleges were founded.

At the beginning of the American Common School Period, most children were educated at home or in small country schoolhouses where one teacher taught all grades. The teachers were then paid by the community members.
