Las Cholitas, the History

Las Cholitas self-identify as mestizas or indigenous Bolivians. They live in the central Andes, but mainly in Bolivia. These women have a long and rich history that has been preserved mainly by their style.

Who are Las Cholitas?

Why I choose to talk about the history of las cholitas

-I chose to talk about the history of las cholitas because they are a group of Women who are often discriminated against, and many people don't know this.

-In the last decade las cholitas have begun reclaiming their power in many ways.

The Textbook

The textbook talks about the fashion of las cholitas, and it goes into some of the history of where certain fashion trends seen in the cholita community comes from. This got me interested in the deeper history of las cholitas.

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted

My Findings

Sara Jane Armstrong , writer for World Footprints says that:

- Cholitas faced many hardships because they were deemed inferior in Bolivian society, and were often looked down upon by city dwellers.

- The colorful skirts that the cholitas wear were origionally introduced to them as the uniforms for the poorest women in Bolivia.

-Cholitas have been exploited through wresting matches, run by manipulative promoters who would pocket the money and advertise the events as novelty acts to attract tourists.

Eduardo Leal, writer for The Gaurdian says that:

- Cholitas have been fighting for their rights since the 60's, but it wasnt until President Evo Morales, Bolivias first indiginous president was elected that their movement was invigorated.

Something that surprised me

Something I found interesting was the fact that colonizers came from England to Bolivia trying to sell the local Bolivian men hats. When they found the hats were too small to fit the men's heads, they convinced the Bolivian women that these were fashionable amoung women in London. Cholitas have used these hats as a signature fashion item to this day.
