This article is about how illiterates pose a danger to the basic equality in political construction. The basic theme of the story is that illiterates cannot function in society because they cannot complete simple tasks. It gives further examples and claims that they can be a danger to their own children. The author explains what role illiterate people play in society. In the article, he explains how illiterate people don’t have significant participation in society. He also describes important things illiterate people can’t don’t such as read medicine bottles, documents federal paperwork, track signs, and food labels. KEY ARGUMENTS

The key argument of the article is that illiterates struggle everday to do simple task that everyone can do easy. Another argument that he made was that people who are literate, especially people in power, aren't doing anything to improve the number of illiterate people

A

IMPORTANT QUOTES

“If even one third of all illiterates could vote, and read enough and do sufficient math to vote in their self-interest, Ronald Reagan would not likely have been chosen president.” i think this quote was important because this quote shows how strongly he think people being unable to read is effecting things, not only is he explaining that being illiterate is affecting everyday task but it is also affecting bigger thing such as choosing the president.

QUOTE #1

" A woman in Detroit brought home a gallon of Crisco for her children’s dinner. She thought she had bought the chicken that was pictured one the label. She had enough Crisco now to last a year- but no more money to go back and buy the food for dinner". This quote is also significant because it was just one of the many examples that the author tried to use to show the everyday task that are easy for literate people are very difficult for illiterate people.

QUOTE #2

QUOTE # 3

Throughout the article the author blames the government for the fact that nothing is being done to fix the issue of the high illiteracy rate in the United States. Toward the end of the argument he writes, “This is the nation that we live in. This is a society that most of us did not create but which our President and the other leaders have been willing to sustain by virtue of malign neglect” . He is saying that it is because of the current president, at that time it was Reagan, and past leaders that the illiteracy rate have gone up to the level it is. He writes that the people in the government have purposefully neglected this pressing issue. which is very important to note because this one of his main arguments through out the passage.

ANALYSIS

In this article, Kozol talks about the effects of being illiterate. He explains how it limits opportunities and advantages as well as reducing the quality of people's lives. When you don't have the basic knowledge of reading and writing, it will be hard to get through life. He has an informative and sympathetic tone in the article because he is explaining the difficulties that come with being illiterate. Kozol mainly uses the rhetorical devices ethos and pathos to explain how illiterate people are at a disadvantage.
