The meaning of refugee is a person who is forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or a natural disaster.
The world has over 65.6 million refugees as of 2017.
That means they have been individually placed worldwide because of conflict, violence, or human rights violations.
People are running out of space to keep refugees, so there are refugee camps.
The refugees that live there have to stay at camps and live in tents in the middle of nowhere with other refugees.
They live without access to basic necessities like food, water, sanitation, and health care.
Josef's journey was about how he and his family were forced out of Germany because they were Jewish and Hitler didn't like Jewish people. So they decided to board a ship called the St. Louis that was going to Havana, Cuba. The President of Havana wouldn't accept them in, so the captain decided to ask other countries in North America to let them in. But the other countries wouldn't let them in because they didn't want to make Hitler mad. So the St. Louis had to go back to Europe to the countries that did allow the refugees in. Josef and his family ended up in France for awhile. Once that was overtaken by the Nazi's, they went to Switzerland to be safe. But they were soon captured.
The first time Josef persevered was when Josef first saw his dad. The first time Josef saw his dad after he was taken away was when they got to the St. Louis. It was hard for Josef to look at him because Josef didn't recognize him.
The second time Josef persevered was when Cuban soldiers kept telling him that they'll be able to get into Havana tomorrow over and over again.
The third time Josef persevered was when they had to do a medical check-up and he slapped his Dad so he could look presentable. His dad looked terrible and Josef knew that if the doctor saw him like that they wouldn't be able to get into Havana.
The fourth time Josef persevered was when Josef got a tour below deck. He saw a bunch of framed pictures of Hitler. The sailors were saying frightful things to Josef about how they followed and believed what Hitler said.
The fifth time Josef persevered was when Josef had to choose between himself or his little sister Ruthie when the Nazi's caught them. He chose to let his sister Ruthie have freedom instead of being selfish and choosing himself. Instead he went to a concentration camp with his mom.
She and her family and her best friend's family were leaving Cuba to try to get to Miami. She left because her president said people could leave without consequences, but they had to leave immediately. They wanted to go to America because Cuba was running out of food because they had been cut off by the Soviet Union. Isabel and her family and friends had to travel in a little homemade boat that wasn't big enough for all of them.
One time Isabel persevered was when Ivan, her best friend, died on the boat. She was incredibly sad, but pressed on and kept going to freedom.
Another time she persevered was when Senor Castillo jumped off the boat to save everyone from the Coast Guard. She knew they would send him back to Cuba, but she also knew that he did it for a good reason.
The third time Isabel persevered was when she had to swim ashore with her newborn baby brother. She splashed and got to shore with her baby brother.
The fourth time she persevered was when she had to trade her most prized possession for gasoline. She traded it and was able to get enough gas to go to Miami.
Another time she persevered was when she had to push a boat to shore. It was too heavy for her but she got it to shore anyway. She also persevered when she had to leave Cuba to get somewhere safer. She knew she would miss her home, but it was the right choice to make.
Mahmoud was a joyful kid until war came to his country. It affected him a lot because his town was getting destroyed. In his country of Syria his building that he lives in was struck by a bomb and his parents finally decided that they would try to move somewhere else. When they drove away they ran into people who had guns. They were afraid and the Dad did all the talking, but his little brother didn't listen. The little brother was able to take all the pressure off his Dad and the guys with guns got into the car with them. While they were traveling to another country someone fired at their car and the guy next to Mahmoud was killed. They had to abandon their car and walk on foot to Turkey. There they went to a tent city and there the Dad found someone who would give them a ride to Greece. The boat was supposed to leave many times, but it never did. When the boat finally came the got on in the middle of the night, but the boat hit a rock in the ocean and the boat popped and everyone went into the water.
After a long time of being in the water, Mahmoud had to hold up his little baby sister and mother. Mahmoud found a man who was dead, so he took off his life jacket, but stopped because if he took it the man wouldn't be able to have a proper funeral. But he ended up doing it anyway because it was the only way to survive. He gave the jacket to his mom. Soon they heard a boat coming and Mahmoud and his mom grabbed onto the side of the boat. But they were tipping the boat, so Mahmoud had to make a decision to give his little sister to the people on the boat, so she would be safe. He had to let go and so did his mom. After awhile another boat came by and saw the light from Mahmoud's phone and picked them up. His brother and father were on the boat. When they reached land they went on a ferry to Hungary. When they got to Hungary they found a guy who was willing to give them a ride all the way to Austria. But after a few hours the guy pulled out a gun and demanded all their money and made them get out of his car.
They had to walk to a train station, but the police were there and they got arrested and tear gassed. Mahmoud and his father were together, but his mom and brother were with another group. Finally they reached a refugee camp and they found their mom and brother again. Outside of the refugee camp were news reporters. Finally, Mahmoud opened the door and left the refugee camp. Mahmoud ignored the guard who was yelling at him because he knew she wouldn't do anything with all the news cameras looking at him. Everyone else followed his bravery and walked out with him. They kept walking all the way to Germany. On the way he knew he couldn't stop because they would arrest him again. When they finally reached Germany people gave them water and food. They had people who would give them food and homes until they got on their feet in Germany. Finally, Mahmoud would go to a family like his, but he actually went to an elderly couple named Ruthie (Josef's sister) and Saul.
While they were touring around the house Mahmoud asked what the pictures on the wall were. Ruthie said those were from her brother and mother. She explained that her family were Jewish and the Nazi's were trying to take them. Her father went to a concentration camp. They tried to escape, but no one would take them. So they went to France and were caught by the Nazi's. The Nazi's made her mother choose which one of her kids would live. Her brother chose to go with the mom.
