Faith Ringgold's most famous work of art is a book called Tar Beach.

The award-winning picture book was inspired by Ringgold's own childhood.

She illustrated the book

with her famous story quilts.

Black artists, musicians, philosophers and writers lived and worked all around her.

Their work inspired her for the rest of her life.

Ringgold made art and wrote books that celebrated black leaders

like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Her artwork taught people about

the lives and courage of black people.
