Determine Grid Azimuth using a Protractor

BLC 11-20

Scope

  • At the end of this course you will be able to Identify the starting point and ending point on the map. Draw a straight line on the map connecting the points, align the protractor to the map, and determine the value of the angle
  • At the end of this course, you will be able to determine grid Azimuth using a Protractor.

What is a Grid Azimuth?

Deliberate Risk Assessment: Low

Protractor

They are scaled to the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS). They use the metric system for measuring distance and feature both compass degrees and mils around the edges. These protractors are for use with the military topographic maps.

Map

A military city map is a topographic map (usually at 1:12,550 scale, sometimes up to 1:5,000), showing the details of a city. It delineates streets and shows street names, important buildings, and other elements of the urban landscape important to navigation and military operations in urban terrain.

True North

True north is the direction along Earth's surface towards the geographic North Pole or True North Pole. Geodetic north differs from magnetic north, and from grid north.
