  • Mythology was a form of early science to Greeks because it helped explain the unexplainable or attempt to make sense of life's mysteries.

E

Ancient greek Mythology shaped greek beliefs about creation , god and godess these believed are still being reference to in our everyday life.

The Creation Myth

The Greeks did not believe that the gods created the universe it was the other way around.

First was Cha·os.

/ˈkāˌäs/

noun

formless matter, darkness, voidness.

Out of Chaos emerged primordial gods :

Gaia Tartarus Eros Nyx Erebus

(Mother Earth) (Underworld) ( love ) (Night) (Darkness)

In her sleep, Gaia gave birth to Uranus ("Sky") and Pontus

("Sea").

D

  • Uranus became Gaia's mate.
  • Gaia gave birth to 12 Titans.
  • Three Cyclops.
  • The three Hecatoncheires.

C

  • Uranus hated all his children but especially the monsters.
  • Intimidated by an oracle stating that he would be overthrown by one of his children.
  • In order to prevent this from becoming a threat, he hurled all of them (the Cyclopes and the Hundred Hand Giants) into the Tartarus, condemning them to a life of imprisonment.

This angered Gaea and she plotted against Uranus. She made a flint sickle and tried to get her children to attack Uranus. All were too afraid except, the youngest Titan, Cronus.

Cronus mutilated his father and overthrew him.

In the sea, the genitals bobbed on the water, giving rise to foam.

from this foam emerged the fully formed goddess of love: Aphrodite (whose name in Greek just means that, "emerging out of foam").

From his spilt blood came the Giants.

B

  • After gaining their own freedom, the Titans made Cronus their king and freed the Cyclopes and their Hundred Handed brothers from Tartarus.
  • However, due to their arrogant nature and their resistance to authority, the latter (Cyclopes and Giants) were soon thrown back to Tartarus by Cronus.

  • Cronus took Rhea for a wife and divided the Earth among his fellow Titans.
  • Cronus and Rhea had 6 children: The Olympians.
  • However, Gaea and Uranus both had prophesied that he would be overthrown by a son. To avoid this Cronus swallowed each of his children as they were born

This made Cronus’ wife, Rhea, very angry, so she plotted against Cronus. When it came time to give birth to her sixth child, Rhea tricked Cronus.

Rhea replaced the infant with a stone to prevent Cronus from swallowing Zeus. He grew up in hiding (Crete)

When Zeus was grown he made his dad regurgitate his siblings

Zeus and his siblings raged war against their father, Cronus.

  • The war between the Titans (except Prometheus, Epimetheus, and Oceanus) and the Olympians lasted 10 years.
  • Atlas became their leader in battle and it looked for some time as though they would win .
  • However, Zeus was had other plans. He went down to Tartarus and freed the Cyclopes and the Hecantoncheires. Prometheus joined Zeus as well.
  • Zeus, with the use of his lightning bolt given to him by the Cyclopes, defeated Cronus and his army. Most of the Titans were confined to Tartarus.
  • . All except for Atlas, who was singled out for the special punishment of holding the world on his shoulders.
  • Zeus divided the world among his sibling gods…
