Mating for life

Bald eagles mate for life.

Mating for life means that if one dies in the first year they met they don't mate again.

Bald eagles begin mating at 4 or 5 years old. That is also when their head becomes white.

Breeding age

Nests

Bald eagles build their nests in the tops of large trees near water.

They return to the same nest every year.

Nests can be huge.

The biggest nest found was 9 feet across, 20 feet tall and weighed 2 tons.

Young

Eagles lay 2 eggs at a time.

They inclubate the eggs for 34-36 days.

They stay in the nest for 75-90 days.

The babies do NOT have a white head; they are all brown.

Diet

Bald Eagles eat FISH.

They are carnivores.

They also eat water birds and small mammals.

Bald eagles are 3-4 feet long.

Their wingspan can be 8 feet wide.

They weigh 6-14 pounds.
