Archimedes, the ancient genius.

Segment One

His name is Archimedes. He was born in Syracuse, Sicily, which is now modern day Italy. Archimedes lived from 287 B.C. to 212 B.C.

He died at the old age of around 75 years.

Vital Statistics

Three historic events that occurred during his life

The first big event in Archimedes life is when King Ptolemy II is given the world's first lighthouse. It was 400 ft tall and can be seen from over 4 miles away.

The second big event is when Rome began to besiege Syracuse but was heavily delayed by Archimedes war machines that were completely ahead of his time.

The last big event in his life is when Rome wants to make peace with Macedonia but instead they attack Rome and Rome declares war on Macedonia, which started the Second Macedonian War.

When Archimedes was a teenager his father knew he was very smart and sent him off to study mathematics and engineering in Alexandria, Egypt.

So surprisingly, Archimedes marital and family status are one of the only things that were unknown about him.

  • Archimedes discovered the relation between the surface and the volume of a sphere, and the circumscribing cylinder.
  • He created the formulation for the Hydrostatic Principle.
  • And he invented the Archimedes screw, which helps raise water from the ground.

  • Archimedes had a big role in defending Syracuse from a Roman siege in 213 B.C.
  • He used a large array of mirrors to reflect, and then concentrate sunlight to burn enemy ships.
