Derrimut

Saviour or Traitor?

Who is Derrimut?

Who was Derrimut?

Derrimut was one of the many Indigenous leaders, in Australia. What was different about Derrimut was he was a significant leader.

His Story

Derrimut was born around the 1810s, before the the European settlement in victoria.

He helped the settlers many times. He had informed the Europeans of an incoming attack, from upper-tribesmen.

Because of this, the Europeans managed to prepare themselves, and fight them off.

Continuation

Since he told the Europeans about the attack, he has been called a "traitor" by other Aboriginal Clans. This starts the debate on whether he was a Saviour or Traitor.

If Derriumut did not turn to tell the settlers on the incoming attack, the settlement in Melbourne would have been delayed for some years.

Since then, Derrimut was closely associated with John Fawkner. Often, they would go fishing and hunting with Fawkner and some other aboriginies.

Another 2 times, Derrimut again saved the settlers, by warning them about incoming attacks.

Derrimut's end

Derrimut suffered many ailments from the Melbourne Hospital in 1863.

In January 1864, Derrimut was reported to be mistreated by 2 nurses.

Derrimut was moved to the Benevolent Asylum in North Melbourne. John Fawkner visited Derrimut the day before he died.

Derrimut died on the 26th of April 1864, at the age of 54. In Derrimut's honor, his name was given to the Parish of Derrimut. The suburb of Derrimut was detached from Deer Park in 1998.
