(Human Impacts | ICPDR - International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, 2022)
The Danube river is very important for wildlife and ecosystems, but the biodiversity of the river has gotten smaller because of the pollution. Humans also use the river for living necessities. The pollution in the river has affected the water quality over the years, which is a danger to the 20 million people who rely on it just for drinking water.
In the Danube river, the most common pollutants are hazardous substances, pollution from nutrients (like nitrogen), and organic pollution, which is pollution from non-toxic substances. Most of this pollution, (organic or not), comes from runoff from large public buildings, factories, or farms.
There are currently projects working to help stop pollution in the river, and to help improve the water quality. Some ways we could help is to donate money to organizations like the Danube Pollution Reduction Programme (DPRP), convince factories to find a better way to get rid of waste, and prevent harmful runoff from getting into the river.
