  • Attended St. Francis school for colored children
  • First job was an appretince in the Richmond Planet
  • Other jobs included a pressman, boxing trainer, barber, and railroad porter
  • First theater he performed at was the Pekin Theater
  • First popularity came when he played Brutus Jones in "The Emperor Jones"
  • Named in top 10 as a person to do the most for American theater in 1920's
  • Recipient of the NAACPS Medal in 1921
  • Honored by President Warren G Harding
  • Died in 1930 & buried with unmarked grave in Woodland Cemetery, the Bronx
  • 61 years after his death (1991), he was inducted into American Theater HOF
