My family tree
by Sophia McGrew
This presentation includes every member of my family I could find. We already had extensive research on my mom's side, but little information on my dad's family. If there is a heart on the person, they had heart disease.More information on heart disease is found on the icon with the big eart. If there is a yellow star on the person, they were interviewed and more information can be found about them by clicking their icon. It was also very difficult to find photos but I did my best. :)

My dad, Dan McGrew, was born on October 2, 1966, in Wheeling, West Virginia. Being the football coach's son in a small town, he remembers going to football games with his father, playing football and basketball with the other boys in his neighborhood, the terrible task of mowing the lawn, and dressing up in his army uniform. He was an athlete, and liked school, but mainly for the social aspect. He liked the spirit in his school the most. He wasn't the best student, but enjoyed History class the most. He had a hard time in science classes, and doesn't remember much about the classes other than dissections. When asked about DNA, he told me he didn't remember learning about it. He remembers spending lots of time at the mall with friends in his high school days. He went to the Virginia Military Institute for college, and went into logistics after managing a warehouse. He has always wanted to go to the Rose Bowl. He gave me this advice: “Everybody has a plan until you get hit in the mouth”.

My Uncle Mel Was born on August 31st, 1930, in New York City. He was always very focused on education, earning his PhD after lots of studying. When recalling his childhood, he remembers days spent at the park with his family, reading as many books as he could, playing jacks, and dreading doing the laundry. He attended high school in Queens, New York, and described his school as rigorous, though he enjoyed it. From a young age, he loved science and math, and was encouraged by his teachers to keep pursuing learning. Though he remembers learning a lot, he never learned about DNA until college. He became a nuclear physicist after encouragement from his professors and went on to aid in the construction of nuclear warfare for WWII. When I asked him about something he always wanted to do, he said he wished he could have tried out being a professional musician. Like me, he plays the flute. His advice for me on my education was simple: "Never stop learning".
