Exposition

Exposition: setting the scene

- introduces characters and setting

•Setting- Venice. There is a heated discussion in the middle of the night between Iago and Roderigo. We learn of Iago’s anger toward Othello because he wasn't appointed lieutenant. He also shows his prejudice. Roderigo hates Othello because Desdemona is in love with him

• Iago and Roderigo call out to Brabantio and tell him about Othello and Desdemona’s relationship

• Brabantio confronts Othello. He insults him and accuses him of black magic. This interaction reveals Brabantio’s prejudice while Othello is calm and collected.

• Othello is needed at the court

• Conflict with Brabantio resolved as Desdemona confessed in front of Duke/senators

• We learn that there was a relationship with Brabantio and Othello

• Brabantio warns Othello that Desdemona will lie to Othello like she did to him

• Othello and company are to sail out to Cyprus

• Iago is going to “help” Roderigo with getting Desdemona

• We learn of Iago’s plan of revenge- Iago’s soliloquy

• Iago banters with Desdemona- Cassio reassures her. Iago sees this action as something he can use against Cassio, Desdemona, and Othello

• Desdemona and Othello reunited after being separated

• Iago tells Roderigo that Cassio and Desdemona are in love with each other- Iago tells Roderigo next step of plan, which is to get Cassio drunk and let Roderigo get hit

• Iago also believes that Cassio slept with his wife

• Celebratory feast- war with Turks over and Othello and Desdemona wedding night (consummation)

• Iago convinces Cassio to get drunk (even though he is a light-weight). Iago tells Montano that Cassio has drinking problem

• Cassio gets into fight with Roderigo. Roderigo gets hit by him. Montano tries to calm Cassio down but they end up fighting--> Montano gets wounded. Roderigo runs off and warns the town of a riot- BELL RINGS

• Othello comes down and asks who started this- wedding night ruined- Cassio gets fired

• Cassio trusting Iago of plan- will try to help Cassio by getting him to Desdemona who will in turn try to help him

• Cassio fails to be patient. Cassio and Des. have private convo (Emilia is present though)

• Cassio leaves (Critical moment)

• Iago plants the seed of doubt- says jealousy is like a monster

• At first, Othello says he will not be swayed by jealousy. However, that changes soon after Iago warns Othello to watch Desdemona.

• Desdemona loses her handkerchief. Emilia picks it up and gives it to Iago. Iago will later put it in Cassio’s room

Rising Action: the story builds and gets exciting

Othello kneels and vows to make sure Cassio is dead within three days and he is going to find a way to kill Desdemona

Falling Action

• Desdemona talks to the clown and searches for her handkerchief. Othello reacts to it missing

• Bianca and Cassio interact and he gives her Desdemona’s handkerchief and asks for it to get copied.

• Othello and Iago talk, Othello gets into an epileptic fit. Cassio enters but Iago shoos him away. Othello hides to spy on Cassio and Iago talking

• Bianca enters and gives Cassio back the handkerchief

• Iago suggests to Othello to strangle Desdemona in her bed. Iago also tells Othello that he will kill Cassio.

• Lodovico comes from Venice to give a message to Othello. We learn Othello is called to Venice and Cassio will be governor of Cyprus. Desdemona gets slapped by Othello in public

• Othello interrogates Emilia. Othello and Des have intimate convo and Des asks what she did wrong. Othello accuses her of being a whore.

• Emilia asks what’s wrong but Des is too shocked. Emilia believes someone evil is manipulating Othello.

• Roderigo calls Iago out and says that his words and actions don’t match. Roderigo is broke because he lent Iago his diamonds to give to Des. However, he still hasn’t gotten Desdemona yet. Roderigo wants to confess his feelings to Desdemona and hopefully get his diamonds back. If not, he challenges Iago to a duel. Iago stays calm and reassures he has done everything he could. If Roderigo doesn’t sleep with Desdemona by tomorrow night, he can kill him. Then he says that Venice calls for Othello and Cassio is appointed governor of Cyprus. Iago tells Roderigo to kill Cassio in order to extend Othello and Desdemona’s stay.

• The formal dinner ended. Othello tells Desdemona to go to her room and dismiss her servants. Emilia and Desdemona have intimate convo. Desdemona tells the story of the maid Barbary and sings “Willow”. Emilia shares her views about wives and men

Falling Action: what happens because of the climax

- we know the story will end soon

Resolution

Resolution: the main problem is solved

- sometimes the protagonist solves it

- sometimes the problem is solved by others

• Iago and Roderigo ambush Cassio. Cassio stabs Roderigo and Iago wounds Cassio in the legs.

• Iago kills Roderigo

• Othello confronts and smothers Desdemona. Emilia discovers Othello murdered Desdemona. Emilia exposes Iago’s role. It is also revealed that Brabantio died of grief. Iago kills Emilia. They capture Iago and Othello cuts him, but doesn’t kill him.

• Iago isn’t going to speak any further, but letters exchanged between Roderigo and Iago confirm his evil plot.

• Othello kills himself

Denouement

• Gratiano inherits Othello’s property

• Cassio is appointed Governor of Cyprus. He also gets to decides when and how Iago will get tortured.

• Lodovico will go back to Venice and relay the horrible tragedies that have happened in Cyprus
