Early Life

  • St. Basil was born around 330 AD in Caesarea of Cappadocia, Modern day Turkey.
  • He was born into a Christian family, a "household of saints."
  • His Grandfather, Mother, and Father all became saints of the church, as did 4 of his 9 brothers and sisters.

Life of Service

St. Basil the Great

He attended school in Caesarea, Constantinople and later on went to Athens, where he met Saint Gregory in 352 AD. Sometime later, St. Basil established a school practiced law. He eventually then became a monk and found several monasteries. After his success in establishing monasteries, in the year 362 AD, he was ordained to the holy priesthood, and in 370 AD, became bishop of Caesaria.

What kind of a life did he have?

What kind of a life did he have?

St. Basil is known for his intelligence and caring for the unprivileged and the victims of drought and famine. He was also known for building monasteries, which later then became schools for the poor, and contributing in the writing of the Nicene creed.

Difficulties

Arianism was a heretical idea that denied Christ's divinity. He went through hardship settling down the Arian heretics persecuting Christian beliefs and threatening the Church itself.

Another hardship he overcame is travelling from places to places, to expand his knowledge, and preaching the words of God.
