It possessed the world's most productive economy and the mightiest armed forces. It dominated global manufacturing and trade and was on the cutting edge of invention, science, and technology. Its popular culture was dominant across much of the globe as well. Yet, the U.S. was not without its enemies…

On September 11th, 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists turned commercial airlines into missiles and attacked key symbols of American economic and military might. In response, President George W. Bush and his advisors vowed to punish all nations sponsoring terrorism. Then, using questionable intelligence and asserting the right to use preventative force, the U.S. went to war with Iraq. In the end, America’s superpower status couldn’t protect them from terrorists, nor did it guarantee victory over insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2009 Barack Obama was elected as America’s first African American President. Facing the economic woes of the “Great Recession” and the military challenges of the ongoing war in Iraq, the President signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and vowed that all U.S. troops would leave Iraq within 18 months. President Obama was reelected in the 2012 election, defeating Republican Mitt Romney.
