1814 - The first school for deaf children was founded in Hartford, Connecticut.
1880 - The first national connvention of Deaf-Mutes held in Cinncinati, Ohio.
1880 - In Milan, deaf educators had a conference and resulted in a ban on sign language, the only one against it was Britain and the US.
1888 - The first deaf baseball player was William "Dummy" Hoy
1889 - Statue of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Alice Cogswell unveiled at Gallaudets Kendall Green campus.
1890 - The national association of the deaf is founded and gained support in reaction to the Milan resolution

1901 - The first electric hearing aid (radio aid) is developed
1907 - There was a possible prohibition of intermarriage of deaf people becuse the Committe of Eugenics was chaired by Alexnder Grahmbell and he wanted marriage between deaf people should be banned.
1910 - U.S. President William Howard Taft informed the NAD that he instructed the Federal Civil Service Commission to remove all discriminatory barriers to federal employment of deaf workers.
1920 - A resolution passed that said if anyone tried to take away sign language from the deaf was an enemy.
1920 - The NAD went on record protesting the practice of doctors who attempted to advice parents of deaf children about educational matters the NAD also fought doctors who claimed they could restore hearing and urged legislation to require doctors to report all cases of deafness to state board of education.
30's-40's
Events of the 1930's - 1940's
1930 - The NAD presented a memorial statue of Abbe Charles Michael de l'Epee, the founder of the first free school for the deaf in the world to the St. Marys institution for the deaf in Buffalo, New York.
1937 - U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt pledged his cooperation to increase civil service oppertunities for deaf workers. The NAD the reported ongoing work with U.S. post Master general to create more employment oppertunities for deaf workers.
1948 - Ford Times printed Authur H. Lewis' article, "World Safest Drivers", which gave deaf drivers a considerable boost the article was frequently quoted or referred to years afterwards whenever well meaning but poorly informed legislaters began pying with the idea of introducing legisation to ban deaf drivers.
1949 - The NAD undertook a movement to place 2 deaf professional baseball players William "Dummy" Hoy and Luther Taylor in the nationanl baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown NY
60's
Events in the 1960's
1960 - First linguistic book in defense of asl as a lanuage by William Stoke
1964 - Phone for the deaf is invented, Robert Weitbrecht who is deaf, invents the teletypewriter (tty)
1964 - Congress concludes that oral deaf education is a failure in the Babbidge Report
1967 - National thatre of the deaf is established
1968 - Bilingual Education Act is passed, ASL is not included because it is not recognized as a language
70's-80s

1972 - Program captioning is introduced, the caption center at WGBH in Boston open captions "The French Chef" which was the countries first nationally broadcast captioned program.
1974 - National Association of the Deaf conducted census of Deaf Americans counting 13.4 million hearing and 1.8 million deaf americans
1985 - Cochlear implants are approved for clinical trials of people 18 years or older, the Deaf feel controverseal on this topic.
1987 - Marlee Matlin was the first deaf actress to win an Academy Award for starring in the movie "Children of a Lesser God".
1988 - There is an eight day protest of students and faculty members of Gallaudet University protesting the selection of another hearing president.
1988 - The "Signing Naturally" curriculum was published.

1995 - The first deaf Miss America Heather Whitestone was crowned
1995 - Cochlear implant usage increases
1998 - The Federal Communications Commission released new captioning rules for the broadcast and cable television indistry.
2000 - The Brittish Governement sees the Brittish Sign Langage as a real, genuine language.
2006 - There is now an estimate of 560 million people in the whole world with a hearing loss.
