What is Newborn Hypoglycemia?
Background
- Blood glucose insufficient to support neurologic, organ, and tissue function
- Most newborns have slight decrease in blood glucose after birth
- No agreement on exact number, lower limit is 40-45mg/dL
Risk Factors
Risk Factors
- Preterm or late preferm infants
- SGA or LGA
- Low birth weight
- Infants of mothers with diabetes
- Infants that experienced perinatal stress
*At risk infants need to be fed within the hour and glucose tested 30 minutes after*
