What is Newborn Hypoglycemia?

Background

  • Blood glucose insufficient to support neurologic, organ, and tissue function
  • Most newborns have slight decrease in blood glucose after birth
  • No agreement on exact number, lower limit is 40-45mg/dL

Risk Factors

Risk Factors

  • Preterm or late preferm infants
  • SGA or LGA
  • Low birth weight
  • Infants of mothers with diabetes
  • Infants that experienced perinatal stress

*At risk infants need to be fed within the hour and glucose tested 30 minutes after*
