Elizabeth Proctor is first introduced to readers by Abby, saying "bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman." In the middle of the play, Elizabeth is shown to have good morals and Abby is revealed as the liar. Elizabeth struggles with the fact that her husband, John, had an affair with Abby. When the trails start, Elizabeth tries to save John by lying. While in jail, Elizabeth realizes that she "kept a cold home". At the end of the play, Elizabeth has lost her husband and is very sad.
Elizabeth's main conflict is that her husband, John Proctor, cheated on her with Abigail. When Elizabeth started to get suspicious that they were having an affair she fired Abby. This led Abby to start spreading rumors about Elizabeth using witchcraft. This conflict ended because John Proctor died.
In The Crucible, Miller uses the character of Elizabeth Proctor to show that even superior members of society can be wrongly convicted. John describes how shocking it is that someone like her could be accused by saying, "...when such a steady minded minister as you will suspicion such a woman that never lied, and cannot, and the world knows she cannot!" Elizabeth has a good reputation which is why John says someone like her should not be accused.
