Spanish Empire Timeline

1492

On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus and several crewmen set foot on an island in the Bahamas. Columbus then claims the land for Spain, this event marks the beginning of the Spanish empire's colonization of America.

1521

On August 13, 1521, Hernan Cortes completed his conquest of Tenochtitlan, his victory brought the Aztec empire to an end. The fall of the Aztecs would lead to Mexico falling under the total control of Spain.

1537

March of 1537 saw the Siege of Cuzco end, as Manco Inca and his forces are unsuccessful in their attempts to purge the Spaniards. The aftermath of the siege results in the Spanish gain control over Peru.

1776

By 1776 Spanish controlled America is now administrated as four separate viceroyalties. The four were known as New Spain, New Granada, Peru, and La Plata.

1809

On May 25, 1809, acts of defiance begin manifesting in Chuquisaca, now known as modern Sucre. The uprisings in Sucre make Bolivia the first American province to rebel against Spanish authorities.

1816

On July 9, 1816, the idependnce of Argentina was formally proclaimed by an assembly. The assembly met in San Miguel de Tucuman, they arrived with provisions for the national constitution.

1821

On September 27, 1821, Agustin de Iturbide leads a movement that wins Mexico's independence from Spain. Mexico's new found freedom proves to be a long, and uninterrupted one.

1898

On December 10, 1898, the Treaty of Paris was signed, bring an end to the Spanish-American war. The end of the war also saw Spain selling the Philippines to the USA, thus ending Spanish rule in the Philippines.

1956

On April 7, 1956, the Spanish protectorate in Morocco came to an end. Morocco quickly gained independence from Spain, requiring all of the territory that the Spanish had previously held.

1968

On October 12, 1968, Spanish Guinea becomes an independent republic, free from the control of Spain. The new republic is named Equatorial Guinea, with Francisco Macias Nguema as its first president.
