"Tend & Befriend"

Overview

Overview

  • Drive of social connection
  • Social isolation causes increase in Oxytocin
  • oxytocin - causes use to seek social contact
  • Promotes maternal tending and protection of social group
  • Social support helps reduce distress and anxiety when feeling stressed out.
  • Tend - refers to protection of friends and family
  • befriend -refers to seeking out the social group for mutual defense
  • Tend and befriend is a response to threat
  • Different from flight or fight
  • One of the two physiological stress response
  • Found in both genders, but seen mostly in females

Male Vs. Female Perspective

  • “Flight or fight”:
  • “The aggressive fight-or-flight reaction is more dominant in men.
  • Stress research has been guided heavily by the fight or flight metaphor, responses that may protect individuals but that are not social in nature.

Male Vs. Female Perspective

  • "Tend & Befriend":
  • women predominantly adopt a less aggressive tend-and-befriend response
  • So while men favor punching or running away, women are more likely to try to diffuse a situation and seek out social support.

Evidence

  • researchers suggested that this difference might all come down to one gene that only men have, called the SRY gene.
  • "The results suggest that the SRY gene impacts men’s hearts and brains during times of stress, causing blood pressure to rise and encouraging an aggressive fight-or-flight response. Since the SRY gene is absent in women, these responses are instead guided by estrogen and other pain-controlling internal opiates, which don’t encourage aggression."

Outcomes Of Theories

Outcomes of This Theory

  • “Tend & befriend” is not just activated in us when we are posed with a dangerous, possibly life-threatening situation. Rather simple stressors can trigger this response.
  • Due to the positive outlook of “tend & befriend” this response benefits both women and children’s mental and physical well-being. Additionally, it allows for a health mechanism to cope with stress through talking and getting support from peer in social groups.
