For years people in Indiana have been called “Hoosiers”. To this day no one knows the real way on how the word came about. Although there are many different stories about how it started and why people in Indiana are called it. The word Hoosier can mean many different things and some people think positively about it while others think negatively. Even now days people in Indiana are still referred to as Hoosiers.
There are a variety of theories on the definintion of Hoosiers and some people even believe there isnt one true defintion. For example people in the Southern part of Indiana believe the word Hoosier to be someone who lives in a small town where everybody’s knows each others name and is kind to each other . While people from Northern Indiana think it has a completley different meaning. Too me a Hoosier is someoe who was born and raised in Indiana, is hardworking and dose anything for their friends and family.
People have very different views on the stereotypes of Indiana. People from Southern Indiana associate the word Hoosier with being hardworking, family oriented self sufficient and conservative. Some people from Northern Indiana believe people from the South to be “red neck” and don’t wanna be called a Hoosier. Even some Native Americans dropped the word Hoosier as people from outside of Indiana associated it with ¨stupidity¨ and ¨roughness¨Depending on where are you are in Indiana the stereotypes of the word Hoosier will always be different.
I think the word Hoosier is primarily associated with positive stereotypes. There will always be those people that call us “rednecks” or “rough” but overall I think people in Indiana are seen as people that have a ton of pride and love for there state. In the movie Hoosiers you see a small town come together for there local basketball team and support them all the way to the State Championship. A team with very little talent but a coach and fanbase behind them that cared for them. That's what being a Hoosier is about. Loving everyone in the community and willing to go out support and show pride for your community.
So in the end we come back to the question What is a Hoosier. It seems there is no true answer to that question. A Hoosier is what you make it. Again I believe being a Hoosier is someone who is born and raised here, has pride for there state and makes the most out of everything while enjoying every second of being a Hoosier
