Introduction

Introduction

I'm William Hottendorf. Let me tell you some things about Plate Tectonics. The 3 basic questions are what is the theory of plate tectonics, who came up with the theory of plate tectonics, and how have the plates changed over time.

What Is The Theory Of Plate Tectonics?

*The theory of land masses drifting

*Plates are cracked parts of the crust.

*14 major plates

*Moving about 1 inch a year

*3 movement types; Convergent, Divergent, Transform

Who Developed The Theory Of Plate Tectonics?

Who Developed

The Theory Of Plate Tectonics?

*Dr. Alfred Wegener

*Born 1880 in Berlin, Germany

*Noticed coastlines fit together, same plant & animal fossils across oceans

*Published theory of continental drift in 1912

*People laughed at his theory.

*Died in 1930

*Theory accepted after 1950's

How Have The Plates Changed Over Time?

*Continents have not always been the same.

*When most collide form super continent

*Vaalbara first super continent, formed 3.6 billion years ago

*Ur 3.3 billion, Kenorland 2.7 billion, Coulmba 1.9 billion

*Rodinia 1.1 billion Had ice age, Pannonia 725 million

*Pangaea formed 330 million years ago when Laurasia & Gondwanaland collided.

*Pangaea broke 175 - 200 million years ago.

Conclusion

People used to laugh at the theory of Plate Tectonics, but now we know that the earth we're standing on is moving under our feet as we speak. I learned so much researching my topic and I hope you learned a lot listening to my presentation.
