key points about flamenco

  • Flamenco is a music and dancing style from the south of Spain.

  • Flamenco is linked to the Roma and Sinti ethnicities that have mantained their traditions throughout generations.

  • 'Flam-' means flame, which could describe the fiery behaviour of the performances.

  • In the late 19th century, the flamenco sounds heard voiced by vegetable vendors were brought into cafes, the 'cafe cantantes', and publicised the form into what is now known as the golden age of flamenco.

  • In 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco as one of the Masterpices of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, a proclamation which raises awareness of its cultural heritage.

ELEMENTS IN FLAMENCO

  • Singing (cante), which is the centre of the flamenco group.
  • Guitar playing (toque), which accompanies and supports the singer and dancer with melodic, rhythmic percussion.
  • Dance (baile), which interprets the emotions of the singer.
  • Handclapping (palmas), which weaves intricate rhythms around the bases of the song.

flamenco - el cante

flamenco - el cante

The songs are sorrowful, tragic, painful and passionate sounds.

Flamenco - El toque

Flamenco - El toque

Flamenco players tend to play the guitar between the sound hole and the bridge, but as closely as possible to the bridge, to produce a harsher, rasping sound quality.

While a classical guitarist supports the guitar on the right leg, and holds it at an incline, flamenco guitarists usually cross their legs and support the guitar on whichever leg is on top, placing the neck of the guitar nearly parallel to the floor.

Flamenco - el baile

Flamenco - el baile

Flamenco dancing is known for its emotional intensity, proud carriage, expressive use of the arms and rhythmic stamping of the feet.

The dancing is similar to doing a workout.

Handclapping - las palmas

Handclapping - las palmas

The handclapping or las palmas is an art in itself, and although it may look easy, it is not, and the palmeros will weave intricate rhythms around the bases of the song, and in the tablaos this is used in conjunction with the zapateado.

The zapateado is the noise created by the foot.

FLAMENCO outfit

FLAMENCO outfit

The dress is trimmed with layers of ruffles on both the skirt and sleeves. The dress is typically brightly coloured, usually in black, red or may be either plain or patterned, with the most famous being the polka dotted 'traje de lunares'.

The outfit is completed with a shawl (mantón de Manila) worn over the shoulders.

Flamenco shoes constructed for dance generally have small nails embedded in the toe and heel to enhance the sound of the dancer's percussive footwork.

introduction / introducción

introduction / introducción

  • We will watch a film about a Colombian flamenco guitarist living in Seville, Spain. Today, thousands around the world are inspired by flamenco and travel to Seville to train as flamenco dancers and guitarists.
  • The guitarist in the film, Juan Ramírez, thought he would live in Seville for one month; he has been living there for 13 years.
  • What are the characteristics that draw you to a particular genre of music?
  • Is it the rhythm, the lyrics, or the experience or feeling the music provides? Why?
