The first source is a textbook created by Stamford, CT: Cengage Learning,
in the year 2002. The point of view of this source is that the Dark Ages in Europe were actually the golden era. This point of view is conveyed through the quote “From 1000 to 1300, the economy of Europe developed and prospered”. This quote shows that Europe was growing and was gaining wealth. Which means that it couldn't have been the dark ages. My second source is a passage created by a monk in the year 225-230. The point of view of this source is that the “Dark Ages in Europe were the golden era. This point of view is conveyed through the quote “ I begged him to continue to guide my studies on a deeper level, for he was an expert in his art and in pharmaceutics, botany and surgery”. This quote shows that during the dark ages, people were learning about a lot of things, which means it's not really dark. The points of view of these sources are similar because they explain that is was golden era, not the dark ages.
The first source is a passage created by Ducksters. The main idea of this source is that West Africa was advancing in art work. This main idea is supported by the quote “One of the main elements of African art is that it is often created in three-dimensions rather than two-dimensions.” This quote shows that while the rest of the world were mainly using paintings, which are 2-D, they were using the more advanced 3D sculptures. My second source is a text created by JSTOR daily. The main idea of this source is that Timbuktu was one of the wealthiest cities and the most knowledgeable cities of it's time. This main idea is supported by the quote “During this period, Europe was awash in rumors of Timbuktu’s seemingly endless wealth and resources.” This quote shows that Timbuktu was thriving with wealth and resources, which allowed them to gain knowledge and power. The ideas of these sources are similar because they describe how West Africa was thriving, not just money wise, but culture and education to. They are different because one describes one city, but the other tells about all of west Africa.
During the “Golden Era” in the West Africa civilization, there was lots of leaning, wealth, and art. Specifically, Timbuktu, a city in West Africa, was the learning center of the world. They were known for their universities and libraries. Furthermore, African kingdoms were a lot more wealthy than european kingdoms. One African king brought so much gold with him on a trip, that the price went down for gold a lot. In addition, West Africa was developing better art. They made sculptures out of all kinds of metals and stone, instead of 2-D artwork like the west of the world. Therefore, during the Middle Ages, West Africa was in its golden ages.
Mali Empire 1235-1400
Songhai Empire 1430-1591
Empire of Ghana 700-1240
For my museum exhibit artifact, I chose to create Sankore University which represents The Mali empire civilization. This artifact represents that I have learned the Mali empire was the wealthiest and most knowledgeable civilization in the dark ages. One thing to highlight about this artifact is that when it was built, it had 4 golden domes on it. This proves that the Mali empire was wealthy. Additionally, the artifact is a university. There weren't many universities in the middle ages, but this one was pretty big. The artifact also is located in timbuktu, the center of learning and wealth in the middle ages. Therefore, I believe that the Middle Ages were the golden era because how could a Empire be so wealthy and smart if it was a dark age?
Sankore University (University of Timbuktu)
In this project, I learned about the Mali empire during the middle, or “dark” ages. One thing I found interesting was that just because Europe wasn't doing good, that it was called the dark ages. But many other civilizations were really prospering. I learned about the “Dark Ages” by examining Articles on line. These sources showed me that the Dark Ages were really bad in Europe. People were starving and broke. I learned about the Golden Era in the Mali empire by examining online articles. These sources showed me that They were really rich, and had the largest learning centers in the world. To show that it was a golden era, I created a building. This artifact represents Sankore university. The years between 500 and 1789 were the golden era because the Mali empire was prospering. Specifically, they were the richest empire on Earth. Furthermore, they were the center of knowledge. Thus, it was a golden era.
Hello, my name is Francisco and today I will be sharing with you my Mali empire museum exhibit. I hope that you will find my exhibit to be interesting. I would first like to share with you a University that I created. One thing you should notice about this is that it was large and topped with gold. This connects to the Mali empire because it is the Sankore university in Timbuktu, which was the wealthiest city in the Mali empire. They were also the center of learning. Thank you for listening to my presentation about the Mali empire. My favorite part of this project was was making the prezi. Overall, I hope you learned that it was not the dark ages, but a golden era.
