Mineral Mining

By:Caden Koepcke

Mineral Mining

Mineral Mining is the process of extracting important minerals from the earth for human use.

There are three diffrerent ways to mine; Surface Mining, Underground Mining, and Placer Mining.

The type of mine varys due to these factors

  • Strength of rock
  • Location of deposit
  • Shape of deposit
  • Cost to mine

What is Mineral Mining?

Underground mine

Important Minerals

Humans rely on many types of minerals to live. These minerals are all found in the earth and need to be mined. Some of these minerals include:

  • Iron
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc

These minerals keep us alive and can be accesed through mineral mining.

Important Minerals

Iron

Iron plays a big role in your bodies health because it carries a very important protein. This protien called hemoglobin, carrys oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. Without iron your body you can start to feel dizzy or nautious.

We extract Iron by underground mining and surface mining. Underground mining is rarer then surface mining.

Calcium

Calcium strengthens bones and teeth. It helps to prevent blood clots and helps muscle contraction. It regulates heart rythems and nerve functions.

To get pure calcium, we have to use a process called electrolysis. This process uses a direct electrical current to seperate the calcium from their source. This takes place in underground and surfce mines.

Calcium

Magnesium

Magnesium plays a role in the human body by regulating protien synthesis, muscle and nerve funtion, and blood pressure.

Magnesium is also seperated by electrolyisis, or the use of a direct electrical current to seperate the magnesium from their source. This takes place in surface mines.

Magnesium

Zinc

Zinc plays a role throughout the human body. It helps your immune system and metabolism function. It helps your body to heal and it helps your senses.

Zinc is mined through open-pit mining and underground mining. In underground mining, a technique called cut-and-fill-stopping is used.

Effect of mining on the eviorment

Mining can release harmful thing into the air, water, and soil. It can kill organisms habitats and the mines can affect a muchlarger area around the mine.

Effect of mining on human health

Due to the use of mercury in mining, many miners have suffered from kidney diseases and neurolgical disorders. Miners have also been polluted by zinc, lead, and copper. By inhaling all of the dust from the mines, miners have affected by, pneumoconiosis, abestosis, and siliocosis.

How to Reduce Impact of Mining

Mining Reduction

We can reduce the impact of mining by,

  • Using low impact mining techniques
  • Reusing mining waste
  • Using eco-friendly equitment
  • Rehabilitating mining sites
  • Shutting down illegal mining

Rehabilitated land after mining

Long T erm Effects

Mining can caue long term effects if not tooken care of. These include:

  • Permanant land damage
  • Large amounts of pollution
  • Polluted water
  • Destroyed communities

Mines can cause so many problems that are very hard to resolve, However people are pushing to try and stop these problems. For example, we are moving to a renewable energy source, rather than a non-renewable source.

Long term Effects

Landslide caused by a mine.

Summary

Mining is a very useful way to get the minerals that we need, but also can be very dangerous. Mining causes so many problems but is nessecary. Hopefully in the future we can make mining safer and less harmful to the enviorment.
