For the Missouri Compromise of 1820, 2 new states entered the union.

Maine became a free state, prohibiting slavery and

Missouri entered as a slave state.

The Missour Compromise was Passed on March 3, 1820. For the Union and Confederate states, they added the 36, 30' line. They called it a compromise because both sides wanted and agreed to get something so they got they 36,30’ line.

Compromise of 1850 is passed

The Compromise of 1850 was passed in January 29, 1850.

California was admitted to the Union as the 16th free state. The north had one more state than the south so that tipped the balance between the north and the south. The Fugitive slave law was passed. All the fugitive slaves were returned to their owners.

Kansas Nebraska Act is passed

Passed in May 30, 1854. The Kansas Nebraska Act allowed people in the territories of kansas and nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. Stephen Douglass wrote the Kansas Nebraska Act. People got to vote on popular sovereignty. The act caused tension between the north and the south.

Andrew Reeder appointed governor

Andrew Reeder became governor on June 29, 1854. President Franklin Pierce was the one to appointed Andrew Reeder governor.

Andrew Reeder was a proslavery man.

He also governed for one year.

James Lane brings settlers to Kansas

James Lane brought settlers to kansas in 1855. He was born in Indiana. He became a lawyer like his father. James Lane was very controversial. He was an important leader in the free state party.He became kansas’ first U.S senator.

Bogus Legislature meets for the first time

The first meeting was in 1855.

The bogus legislature was were the people got to select a delegate for US congress, but the missourians crossed the kansas border and voted for John Whitfield ( pro slavery supporter).

It was called the bogus legislature because over half of the votes were illegal. The people in kansas became very angry with the Missourians for crossing the border and voting illegaly.

Wakarusa war

The Wakarusa War was a skirmish that took place in Kansas territory. A free stater was killed over a land dispute by a pro slavery man. After the killing, proslavery supporters arrested a man attending a free state meeting. The proslavery men went to lawrence and lawrence was under a siege for a week. The Wakarusa War was resolved by a negotiated peace settlement.

THe Wakarusa War happened in 1855.

Samuel Jones attacks Lawrence

Samuel Jones and his group of proslavery followers entered Lawrence with intent to destroy the free state newspaper offices.

They dumped the press type into the Kansas River, looted several businesses, and burned the Free State Hotel. He attacked in 1856.

Pottawatomie massacre

Took place on May 24 1856-May 25 1856. John Brown and a band of abolitionist were responsible for the massacre by killing 5 pro slavery men. His band broke into houses and got their enemies and killed them.

Dred Scott Decision was passed by the Supreme Court

It was passed in 1857.

All African Americans whether free or slave were not citizens of the United States. The government couldn't prohibit slavery in the territories including Kansas.

Marais Des Cygnes Massacre

It happened in 1858.

Five of eleven free staters were killed and 1 wounded. Border ruffians rounded up 11 antislavery men and brought them into a secluded ravine and opened fire on them.

Wyandotte constitutional convention

Passed in July 5, 1859. Samuel Medary approved of the Wyandotte constitution. It let women own property and vote only in school board elections. It did not give any rights to non male white person(blacks and ect.)

John Brown is Hanged

John Brown was executed because of treason, murder, and insurrection.

He tried to seize the Federal arsenal of weapons. He also killed 5 pro slavery men. He died December 2, 1859.

Lincoln is elected president

Lincoln banned slavery in all states. He wanted to see Kansas preserved. Lincoln approved the Pacific Railroad Bill. He becames president in November 6, 1860.

South Carolina secedes

South Carolina seceded in December 20, 1860.

The states that seceded were Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina.

About a third of the population with substantial material resources had withdrawn from the nation.

Kansas becomes a state

Kansas became the 34th state on January 29, 1861. Wyandotte Constitution made Kansas a free state. Once the balance of power shifted in the US senate, there were enough votes for statehood. People of Kansas territory approved immediately of Wyandotte constitution.

Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence

Happened in 1863. Quantrill's raid destroyed Lawrence and order No. 11 issued to quell the bushwhacker violence. 160-190 men were killed.

He came into the town and sacked homes, shot people, looted stores, and burned down buildings.

The U.S government was not pleased when they heard about this.

Battle of Mine Creek

The batttle of MIne Creek happened on October 25, 1864. The battle was fought along Mine Creek in Linn County. There were 10,500 troops involved in the battle. The Union defeated the Confederates.

The Civil War ended in 1865.

The North won the Civil War.

Many people died from the Civil War.
