Jasper Hicks is a 9th grade transgender boy. He is from Edmonton and 2021 was his first year going to J.J. Bowlen Junior High school as a boy.
Jasper has been getting harassed at school for using the boys washroom and has been getting many online threats and hate. Even the principal at his school is not giving him support saying "Boys will be boys" when he spoke up about being harassed.
"jasper, nobody loves you, nobody gets you"
"You are a girl and nothing like cutting your hair short will change that"
“I could just switch genders mid-day, so I could just walk into the girls bathroom whenever. I’ll keep that in mind.”
Jasper is a very courageous boy, he continues to go to school and speak up for himself, while also not giving anyone a valid reason to not like him. "They don't know the facts, they just need to learn and I am trying to help educate them". He still goes to school, knowing that the support from his classmates and even his teachers are not there, which I believe is incredibly courageous.
The principal did bring in Jasper and his parents to discuss the harassment, however he did not punish any of the boys harassing Jasper, but instead just told Jasper to use a gender neutral bathroom or staff bathroom if he doesn't want this happening. The principal showed no support whatsoever and was enabling people to harass Jasper.
Jasper Hicks is a very brave guy in my opinion. To have the courage to continue to go to that school despite the hatred is amazing to me.
