The goal of this law was to provide general legal protection of cultural and natural resources of historic or scientific interest in federal lands.
It is an enforcement component providing for the prosecution of the person/people for the distruction of any historic ruin or monument.
Since the act has been put into place in 1906, many U.S. presidents have used their authority under the act to set aside land almost 300 times.
All respinsabilities of the Antiqutie Act falls into the presidants hand.
Originally the punishments would have been a fine for $500, or 90 day incarcerated.
In 1987 the penalties increased to a fine of $5,000, or six months incarcerated.
16 presidents have used this act, proclaiming more than 150 national monuments. Some, later becoming national parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and Grand Teton.
