RESEARCH TOPIC: DIPO PUBERTY RITES

INTRODUCTION

Dipo is celebrated as a traditional puberty rite by the Krobos in the Eastern region of Ghana. It is a very prominent event which has been carried out for years. It is used to usher girls into puberty. The performance of dipo has brought many controversies among the people of Ghana. This rite is the greatest legacy the Krobos. The dipo rite is believed to ensure that young girls in the tribe remain chaste before marriage, it serves as a form of vocational and (Okumi)housekeeping skills for young girls and attracts tourist to the occasion. However, others think it is contributing to women of this tribe being promiscuous, it encourages early marriages and discriminates against girls vs. their male counterparts

PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE DIPO RITES

  • The rites are held every year between the months of April and May. It lasts for a period of four days
  • . During this period, the girls are dressed in a special way to show that they are being initiated. The girls eat special kinds of meals and can only drink water from the well.
  • They are taught a dance called Klama and under goes spiritual baths (Boakye)
  • During the first day of the ceremony, the celebrants are paraded in the community in a special way with their heads shaved leaving a small portion of their hair(Boakye).
  • On the next day, the girls are given a spiritual bath in the river and are required to eat fruits such as sugarcane and peanuts.
  • Libation is poured as a sacrifice to the gods with three different alcoholic beverages mostly schnapps.
  • Next, the girls are taken to the shrine where they are asked to sit on a sacred stone three times in the presence of the chief priest, elders and their parents. It is believed that girls who are not virgins and yet pretend to be virgins will not be able to get up in the third sitting because the stone is holly and pure and only accepts virgins (“Krobo women become promiscuous due to Dipo rite.”).
  • Any girl who is found not to be a virgin at the time of the rites used to be ostracized in the past and was treated as an outcast. In recent times, a set of purification rituals are performed for such a girl.

PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE DIPO RITES

  • On the last day of the rites, the girls are dressed up in colorful Kente cloth (a traditional cloth in Ghana) and adorned with a lot of beads on their neck, arms, and waist whiles exposing their breast and other parts of their body.
  • The exposure of their breasts for everyone to see signifies that they are transforming into adulthood, after which, no one will see them again.
  • A durbar is then held, during which, the girls perform the Klama dance amidst singing in the presence of onlookers. (Boakye).

WHY THE RITES SHOULD BE ABOLISHED

  • people believe that the celebration of the dipo rite contributes to promiscuity among women of the tribe (“Krobo women become promiscuous due to Dipo rite.”). Girls who successfully undergo the rite gain their freedom after the rites and sometimes decide to sleep with different men after the rites
  • The rites expose girls to early marriages. During the ceremony, men must carry the young girls up mountains. The men who carry them also try to marry them or befriend them immediately after the dipo rite because they know that such girls are better prepared for marriage and are still virgins (“Krobo women become promiscuous due to Dipo rite.”)
  • The ceremony discriminates against the females of the community and also violates their human rights

IMPORTANCE OF THE DIPO RITE

  • the dipo rite is celebrated to ensure that young girls in the tribe remain chaste before marriage. Girls are made to keep their virginity before they can partake in the rites. Girls who successfully go through the ceremony bring honor to themselves and their families
  • the dipo rites serve as a form of vocational training especially for the girls who do not receive a formal education. During this period, elderly women of the community teach the young girls housekeeping and child-rearing skills(Boakye). They are taught to cook, clean, and make beads which they can use to earn income to support their future husbands
  • They are trained on how to be sexually active and be good in bed, this is to help them sexually satisfy their future husbands
  • the celebration of the rite serves as a form tourist attraction for the country. The rites attract an increasing number of tourists from within and outside Ghana

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude, the Dipo rite is an important part of the Krobo culture and initiates go through various processes to succeed.
  • It is believed to ensure girls in the tribe remain chaste before marriage, serves as a form of vocational and housekeeping skills, and it also serves as a tourist attraction for the country.
  • However, it is equally contributing to women of this tribe being promiscuous, encourages early marriages and discriminates against girls vs. their male violates the human rights of young girls

Food for thought: Picture yourself walking in public with your breast and other parts of your body showing to the public especially if you do not agree with the rite

THANK YOU AND GOODLUCK TO YOU ALL.IT WAS REALLY AN HONOR KNOWING YOU ALL!!
