Great Gatsby Summer Project

What did the Green light and the Valley of Ashes symbolize?

Task 1

I think the Green Light symbolize Gatsby hope for life and the future, Gatsby sees the light as something leading him to his future with Daisy. The valley of ashes symbolize the greed and selfishness of the wealthy in twenties. These things also symbolized how people in the twenties had hope for the future (green light) and how people in the twenties saw wealth as their only goal and without money they would live in a "dull and gray place"

Task 1

Rhetorical Devices in The Great Gatsby

Task 2

  • Alliteration is the occurrence of the same letter in one sentence an example of this is "his hand took hold of hers" on page 96.
  • Imagery is when the author uses visually language to describe something. An example of this is the color green in the Great Gatsby Nick calls someone "green with envy", Gatsby also uses the color green as a sign of hope for the future which mean that green is used as color to describe want for money or love
  • Allusion mean to reference something without saying it directly. We can see this in the Great Gatsby in chapter 5 when Daisy and Gatsby meet for the first time, Gatsby look through a copy of Clay's Economics which is about making laws against the British.

Task 2

  • Epizeuixis is when a word or phrase is repeated multiple times. A example of this is when Mrs.Wilson shouted "Daisy! Daisy! Daisy".
  • Metaphor is when an object described in a way that isn't literally true, but helps explain an idea or make a comparison. An example of this is the light it symbolized Gatsby yearning for Daisy.
  • A Simile is when the author compares two things for example “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths"
  • Oxymoron is when two thing contradict an example of this is when he describes Wolfsheim's eating as "ferocious delicacy"
  • Personification is giving living characteristic to a non living things. An example of this is "Half a dozen fingers pointed at the amputated wheel".

Dialectical Journal

Task 3

  • Q-How does Nick feel towards Tom?

Quote:"Two shining arrogant eyes" which "established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward"

Explanation-Tom and Nick are exact opposites, acting as foils to one another.

  • Q-Is Nick an honest narrator or is he bias?

Quote:“inclined to reserve all judgments,”

Explanation- At the start of the book Nick says he is does not judge, but then he continuous judges Tom and Daisy.

  • Q-How does Gatsby's lifestyle affect Nick's judgement of him?

Quote:“No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his ghostly heart.”

Explanation- This quote shows how Nick first thinks of Gatsby as another snobby rich person. Of course this changes over the story because after Gatsby death Nick finds that he was Gatsby only true friend.

Dialectical Journal

  • Q-How does Nick feel about Gatsby's dream of getting back together with Daisy?

Quote: "I wouldn't ask too much of her," I ventured. "You can't repeat the past." "Can't repeat the past?" he cried incredulously. "Why of course you can!"

Explanation- Nick sees Gatsby dream as something that will never be and Gatsby sees it as a very real possibility.

  • How real is the possibility that him and Daisy will get back together to Gatsby?

Quote:"Can't repeat the past?" he cried incredulously. "Why of course you can!"

Explanation- Gatsby is delusional and fills his life with material possessions in order to compensate for what he cannot have.

Q-How does the theme you can't judge a book by its cover apply to this novel?

Quote:“inclined to reserve all judgments”

Explanation- Nick says at the start of the book that he does not judge anyone because, he does not what they are going through.

Ah Ha Moment

Nick finally has a "Ah ha moment" after Gatsby's death seeing that he was the only true friend that Gatsby had because, too many people judge Gatsby's by his parties, home and by his life style

Essential Question

Task 4

Examine the social context of the Great Gatsby, the roaring twenties, "flappers", the rise of cinema, the Lost Generation, Prohibition, organized crime, etc and explain the effects of these phenomena on society as a whole.

The roaring twenties, flappers and organized crime etc effected the society as a whole because as we see in the book society has three different types of people. The first type of person is "old money" these are people like Daisy who got rich because of her family, then we have Gatsby who made money by organized crime and other schemes, "new money". Lastly we have the people who live in the "Valley of ashes",

Essential Question cont.

these people were portrayed as sad or dull. This means that all the movies and crime etc were all telling people that they need money to be happy, this can also explain why Gatsby decided to try and get rich because, he thought that Daisy might love him more if he was rich.
