Types of Network Bridges

- Source-routing bridges -Transparent bridges.

Source Routing bridge

Source-routing bridges

The path between two hosts is determined by the source routing bridge. The source routing algorithm directs a frame using the MAC destination address provided by the source routing bridge. Every station on the extended LAN knows the route along which the frame will be sent in source routing. The frames include the routing information.

Transport Bridge

Transparent bridge maintains a routing table and an update table automatically in response to changing topology.

Transport Bridge

Transparent bridge mechanism consists of three mechanisms:

1. Frame forwarding

2. Address Learning

3. Loop Resolution

Difference between Transparent Bridge and Source Routing Bridge

Source Routing Bridge

Transparent Bridge

1. Transparent bridge service is connectionless.

2. In transparent bridge mechanism bridges automatically develop a routing table.

3. Transparent bridge does not support multipath routing.

1. Source Routing Bridge service is connection oriented.

2. In source routing bridge, bridges do not maintain any routing information.

3. Source routing bridge can make use of multiple path to same destination.

Differences between the two
