Intertextual References in Poetry
2021
Intertexuality is a powerful literary techniques used in novels, movies, poems and plays that allows authors to create multiple levels of meaning
Intertextuality also raises questions about the nature of authorship and originality as texts may be seen as composed from pre-existing elements, rather than created
But how do you ask?
Implicit reference is when the author alludes to another text through ideas, symbols, genre or style.
Explicit reference is when the author directly mentions, quotes or references another text in their work.
Inferred reference is when a text is drawn on by the actual responder and will likely include texts that had not even existed when the text was composed.
How does intertextuality work?
Implied References
When the author alludes to another text through symbols, ideas, genre or style
In Hercules, you can see Herc, Phil, and Pegasus during the training montage strike the same pose that Mr. Miyagi does on the beach in The Karate Kid - this is symbolic for overcoming the barriers that have now been defeated.
Question 1: How is this image a type of implied intertextuality?
1. The Title: Detour
2. Veering away from the path.
3. Off road (not the typical road people would take) will still deliver you to your destination.
4. On the road less travelled
Kirli Saunder's Poem 'Detour' is within the genre of Robert Frost's poem 'The Road Not Taken. The poetry style can be described as conversational, realistic and introspective, as it alludes to the idea that life experiences shape different people differently, and no matter the venture everyone reaches a singluar end. However, unlike Robert Frost's poem, Kirli has used the present participle of verbs, meaning that her peom isn't instructive, informing people which road to take, but is instead conforting. Therefore, Saunder's poem succeeds Frost's, as it addresses all those who have taken the one less travelled by, reminding them that it will make all the difference.

Explict References
Is when the composer directly mentions, quotes or references another text in their work.
1. The Title: There's No Place Like Home
2. Dorothy - direct reference to Wizard of OZ
3. The Yellow Brick Road - vocabulary comes mostly from the wizard of oz.
4. Relates all the characters in the Wizard of Oz to Australian Government affairs.
Watson's poem 'There's No Place Like Home' brings forth the injustices of the past with the present. Watson focuses on the linking of a violent colonial past and contemporary writings about unequal power relations between government, business and Indigenous Australia. As an example, the fairy-tale yellow brick road shows the sites of massacres, and Dorothy cannot escape while the land is handed out for the grazing and mining rights of men of tin and straw.
