Description

Description

Axolotls can exhibit a variety of colors including gray, tan, brown, white, golden albino, white albino (which is rare), and blue.

They normally range from 10-12 inches long, weighing about 8 ounces.

Habitat

Habitat

Axolotls can only be found in the lake complex of Xochimilco, a fresh water lake near Mexico City.

Habits

Habits

Their diet consists of small cretaceous creatures including worms, insects, and small fishes.

A male and female Axolotl reproduce sexually and naturally. Incubation takes 2-3 weeks and the female can lay up to 200-1000+ eggs at one time.

Adaptations

Adaptations

Axolotls are able to regenerate body parts, allowing them to stay as strong as possible.

They are able to undergo metamorphosis so that they use their lungs more than their gills. Just a shot of iodine and they completely transform, looking like tiger salamanders but with spots instead of stripes.

Status

Status

Axolotls are critically endangered. Accustomed to being a top predator in its habitat, this species has begun to suffer from the introduction of large fish into its lake habitat. But the main reason is due to the draining and contamination of the waters. They are also popular as pets and roasted Axolotl is considered a delicacy in Mexico, further shrinking their numbers. However, they sadly do not benefit the existence of humans in any way.

Interesting Facts

Due to the fact that they don't have very many teeth, all they have to do is open their jaws wide and suck in their prey sending it straight to their stomachs without chewing.

Axolotls are named after the Aztec god of death, Xolotl.

They have gills on the outside and a set of lungs allowing them to absorb more oxygen than normal and instead of excreting all of their wastes as urine, they get rid of some of it through their gills.
