LINE

The 1st Element of Design

What is a line?

A line is a mark made through space from one point to another

What is a line?

Lines can be made up of a variety of tools. They can be straight, curved, dashed, soild, thick, thin, and found in countless other forms,

Applying different line types

Applying different lines

Different application of lines can be used to create different kinds of drawings.

Some of these different methods include these types of lines.

  • Structural
  • Outline
  • Contour
  • Gesture
  • Sketch

Structural Lines

Structural Lines

The application of these lines are used during the sketching process of a drawing to give the artist a structured base to create a complete drawing. This method of line application helps establish proper distribution of weight and perspective so that the final drawing looks proportionate.

Contour Lines

Contour Lines

These lines are used to show the curvature of an object that is drawn. This is an alternative to showing value (shading) to give the illusion of space in a drawing.

Gesture Lines

Gesture Lines

Gesture lines are used to draw the general shape of an object. Unlike structured lines, these lines do not have to be used to create proportion in objects drawn, but can be used as a step before using structure lines. A gesture line drawing (often just called gesture drawings) are created with a loose, and quick hand.
